What is Zumba?

Zumba is a Latin-inspired, easy to follow, calorie-burning, mixed ability, dance fitness party brought to you by the tALk active team of qualified instructors. We aim to make your workout fun so you want to keep coming back for more.

We incorporate Latin and International music and dance movements, which create a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system. This class format combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body in an aerobic/fitness fashion to achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. This fun Latin inspired dance class includes Merengue, Salsa, Reggaeton, Cha Cha, Cumbia and Belly Dance. Zumba is designed for everyone. Great for the mind, body and soul!

What are the different types of Zumba?

Zumba Gold is a lower impact version of the dance rhythms used in the original Zumba. It is designed for older adults and beginners.

Zumba Toning is a form of body sculpting using Zumba Toning Sticks. It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party. Learn how to use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones, including arms, abs, buttocks and thighs.

Zumba Kids is a high energy, fun fitness program for children aged 4-12 years. The classes are packed with specially choreographed routines to the latest hip hop, salsa and reggaeton music.

Zumba Burst is a 30 minute Zumba class designed to blend a burst of fiercely intense and highly motivating moves into a fast paced Zumba party.

Modern Pilates is a type of exercise designed to improve core stability, flexibility and overall strength leading to enhanced posture and appearance. It is recommended for everyone. However, it is particularly beneficial for people with weak abdominals and poor posture. Classes are delivered in a small group setting and classes run on a continuous 6 weekly course basis. At most classes there is a qualified Physiotherapist on hand to assist.  

Dance & Tone is a fun total body workout to burn calories and tone. A great class for those returning to exercise or for older adults.

HIIT Circuits is an hour long, mixed ability class to improve your health and fitness. These classes burn fat during and after the class. Here are some thoughts from class members

I can't dance!

Don't worry, that's not a problem! Most of the class will not have had any dance experience before joining Zumba! It's a form of dance aerobics but it's all about having fun and doing some exercise.

I don't know the steps!

It's quite normal not to know all the steps to the dance. Your tALk active Zumba instructor and other team members will be able to show you what to do. There will be others in the class learning with you, so keep going and it won't take long to pick it up! You'll still be burning calories no matter what movements you make. The more Zumba classes you attend, the better you will get.

What do I need to wear and bring with me?

  • We recommend light-weight or sports clothing.
  • Trainers can be worn and ideally basic training shoes without a thick rubbery tread will be best as they allow movement in all directions.
  • A sweat towel is advisable and don't forget to put on your deodorant!
  • Bring along a bottle of water along and drink plenty of water before, during and after the class.

Who can attend the classes?

The classes are definitely open to men as well as ladies. So come along guys!

Are there any age restrictions?

Our Zumba Kids classes are open to children aged 4 to 12 years. To join any other class, participants should be over the age of 16 years.

There is no specific upper age limit, but if you suffer from muscular or joint problems or experience fatigue after exercise you should speak to the instructor before joining in with the class. Have a look at the different classes we run to find the class most suitable for you.

We do advise members to use their own judgment and please bear in mind that Zumba is a form of exercise class and you should be in suitable health to attend.

What music to expect?

Our music will incorporate Latin and International rhythms. However, all our music has a twist - a catchy beat, pure variation and the odd modern chart song or old classic to keep you inspired through the class.

What should I do if I have a Health issue?

Please consult your Doctor if you have any health issue that may affect your ability to take part in any of our classes.

If you have an injury (i.e. ankle, knee, back, neck etc) please make this known to the instructor before the class starts and you will be given advice on how to proceed. We recommend if you have had or do suffer from any chest pains when doing exercise that you also contact your instructor before joining a Zumba class.

Please take the class at your own speed. Our classes are designed to let you put as much or little into your own workout as is comfortable. Should you feel dizzy, faint or tired in a class - there's no problem in stopping at any point and either waiting on the next track or finishing your workout at that point. It's important not to burn yourself out too early and your instructor will be pleased to support with any advice around this.

Why will you be asked to fill in a Health Screening form?

tALk active is governed by specific insurance restrictions. We will ask for your details to:

  • To ensure that you personally are covered by our insurance
  • So you will receive updates of any last minute class changes straight to your mobile phone.

Venue information & pre-booking

There is no need to pre-book for our Zumba, Zumba Gold or HIIT Circuits session, although it is a good idea to turn up early at our smaller venues. At some classes we run a double session so please check the classes page for details.
In all venues we have use of, or erect a stage to make it easier for you to pick up the footwork. Our powerful sound, lighting systems and tALk active team members help to bring you the full party atmosphere!

Changing and shower facilities

Most people arrive in suitable clothes ready to start as very limited changing facilities are available at most of the venues. Some of our members who change after work, use the disabled toilets at various venues as there is more space and privacy. We would however, where possible, recommend that you arrive in suitable clothes ready to start.
